Friday, May 26, 2017, Seminole, Texas – On Thursday, April 20, 2017, Seminole Hospital District (Information Technology Department) detected a Protected Health Information (PHI) breach at Memorial Hospital Clinic South and Memorial Hospital Clinic West Facilities.
Seminole Hospital District servers assigned to both facilities were found to have been compromised by means of ransomware the morning of Thursday, April 20, 2017. Patient data tables, for both facilities, containing patient information were removed and further inspection revealed a ransom note placed by hackers.
Seminole Hospital District has notified federal, and local law enforcement authorities. In accordance with federal law, patients affected by the PHI breach at both facilities have been or will be notified. As of press release, Seminole Hospital District has not been made aware of any activity of misuse of patient information. It is the recommendation of Seminole Hospital District to all affected patients of both clinics to monitor credit reports and/or report any suspicious activity to local law enforcement.

Seminole Hospital District has launched an internal investigation and will continue to assist law enforcement authorities to resolve this matter. Seminole Hospital District has put into place extra safety measures, in an effort, to prevent any further electronic breaches, secure future electronic transmissions, and to safeguard to best of the district’s ability to protect patient information.
