The director of pharmacy is responsible for all drug storage and drug preparation in the hospital. The director of pharmacy ensures that the pharmacy provides optimal services, meets all legal, accreditation and certification requirements and complies with all applicable policies, procedures, codes and standard of the hospital.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Graduate of an ACPE accredited school of pharmacy with a BS Pharmacy degree
Licensure, Registry, Certification
- Current Texas pharmacist license

Prior Work Experience
Eight to ten (8-10) years of hospital experience preferred with 3-5 years in a management position required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary Responsibilities
Ensures safe, appropriate, cost effective drug therapies for patients according to established policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Develops, enforces and maintains policies and procedures that promote cost-effective, appropriate and safe drug use.
- Develops and maintains a medical staff approved formulary.
- Supervises drug storage and preparation areas throughout the hospital.
- Provides for the educational needs of healthcare professionals and patients and their families.
- Ensures maintenance of an adequate drug supply. Ensures the integrity of the drug supply. Establishes specifications for the procurement of drugs, chemicals and biologicals.
- Ensures strict control and accountability for drugs dispensed to patients or distributed to floor stock.
- Assures adequate control and documentation of controlled substances.
Contributes to the quality and effective operation of the department.
- Supervises all pharmacy personnel. Recruits, promotes, disciplines and terminates pharmacy staff.
- Develops job descriptions and performance standards. Evaluates and counsels staff on their performance.
- Prepares work schedules and monitors workload statistics. Maintains an appropriate staffing level.
- Provides for the educational needs of the pharmacy staff.
- Prepares a pharmacy budget annually.
- Reviews monthly financial statistics and plans expenditures within budget guidelines.
- Monitors and justifies all expenses exceeding budgeted targets.
- Ensures preparation and submission of patient charges and financial reports to administration in accordance with hospital policy.
- Administers reports, documents, payroll records, statistical surveys and other required data.
- Ensures compliance with hospital policies and procedures that apply to pharmacy services. Ensures compliance with all applicable Federal, State and local laws, rules and regulations.
Integrates the department into the organization’s primary functions.
- Develops and implements a strategic plan for the pharmacy that supports the mission and goals of the organization.
- Develops and implements pharmacy services in collaboration with associated department services.
- Develops, implements and maintains a program that improves the quality of pharmacy services and supports the quality improvement plan of the organization.
- Participates in all committees/functions required by the organization including the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
- Participates and oversees the Antibiotic stewardship program.
- Monitors and oversees the district’s 340B program
- Establishes productive collaborative relationships with physicians, other hospital staff and within the community.
Maintains competency required for current job title/position
- Maintains current pharmacist license. Ensures applicable CE records and licensure are maintained in department files. Attends management meetings. Sustains professional competency and promotes development through participation in in-services, workshops, seminars and professional organizations.
- Completes all competency/skills assessment requirements.
- Performs staff pharmacist duties when needed.
MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Inventory Control
- Establishes par levels for patient care, and office supplies and procedures for ordering same.
Equipment Management
- Keeps abreast of current technological advances, recommending purchasing or modifications to equipment to maintain current technology.
- Secures preventive and periodic maintenance of all equipment through appropriate vendors.
- Performs quality control monitoring of all equipment and maintains records according to the Texas Department of Health regulations.
Quality Improvement
- Participates in interdepartmental and departmental QA monitoring
- Involves personnel in QA activities
Personnel Management
- Supervises and coordinates employee schedules, call, and holidays.
- Hires, trains, disciplines, and evaluates employee performance according to hospital policy.
Budget
- Develops, maintains, and monitors department budget for fiscal year October 1 -September 30 Participate in Annual Budget Preparation
Administrative
- Develops and maintains departmental policies and procedures in accordance with TDH regulations and hospital policy and procedures.
